The Cinema Legends Influencing My Style

Picture
From Viviana M. C. De La Barca

—It’s no secret that my childhood was greatly influenced by my maternal grandmother’s love for dressmaking.

With my grandmother, mother, aunts, and sisters in Mexico City, we were always all talk about Mexican fashion icons and the legends Dolores del Rio (1904 - 1983) and Maria Felix (1914 - 2002). Both strong, smart women were main leading actresses in Mexican and international cinema, proud of their mixed heritage. Both looked stunning in Mexican traditional clothing as well as in haute couture. Both beautiful and with a great sense of style that spoke to our mixed heritage.

It’s undoubtedly true that all these women laid the foundation for what influences many of my personal looks today, that fusion my dual love for my heritage and modernity.

The mission of the International Library of Fashion Research (ILFR) in Oslo, Norway — In Spanish.

Homage to Alexander McQueen

Picture
Birds in flight fascinate me... I’m inspired by a feather but also its colour, its graphics, its weightlessness and its engineering. It’s so elaborate. In fact I try and transpose the beauty of a bird to women.’ Alexander McQueen.
For this assignment on a window Homage to Alexander McQueen at the London College of Fashion VM training, the inspiration comes from the designer’s quote as it focuses on various representations of his goal to give women the beauty of a bird, by bird feathers being prominent in many of his collections.

The art of ‘plumería’ as we call the feather craft in Mexico in Spanish, is linked to our heart and heritage, therefore this idea.

Love letters and artful takes on underthings make us feel romantic.

This pink blossom set is so sweet and dreamy it hurts. The lace evokes a whimsical sense of romance that transports the wearer to a holiday escapade. Through the soft pink, we celebrate the freedom of embracing femininity unapologetically.

This February 2025, we celebrate the beauty of loving yourself, your femininity, and expressing it with lingerie.

The Color of Happiness

Color themed window design for our second assignment which showcases key visual merchandising principles by creating a strong focal point with a two color composition.

An example of how the choice of color and a few props: a mannequin and a couple of floral placement can create an impactful window display.

STYLING NOTES

What’s styling a primal man? How does he dress? What’s his looks?

Gender has long controlled an individual’s role in society as it set certain expectations for men and women in fashion too. For centuries, dress codes have been used to maintain gender roles, specific social roles and hierarchies. Academics continue writing numerous books examining the societal, psychological and gender significance of dress codes over time.

True, there is no ideology set in stone for the conservative primal man and his dress. Today we have the selfies to portray our style. Before selfies, portraiture was the art to express an individual’s personality. As there are more historical examples that help to guide us. Fashion isn’t merely about the clothes we wear; it’s also a language that speaks volumes about our identity and values.

Primal men then are considered to be modest dressers, the opposite of James Bond whose style evokes the image of an iconic dapper in a suave tuxedo, or in a smart cycling jacket matching neat sport shoes, or look the opposite to a hiphop rapper star. Primal men dress is less subjected to the changes in fashion and upholds a high standard of classic modesty.

In 2024, I’ve assisted different male customers from different cultural backgrounds to make wardrobe choices and unlock their smart, casual, or sporty looks in the men’s department of a couple of well-known fashion houses in the Netherlands. I’ve met different kinds of customers. Some were young guys, kids, adults… some other men were older and even over seventy. Some would bring interesting questions and topics on the stages of a man’s life that have influenced their fashion. Some others would be more practical, less talkative, and would know exactly what clothes they want to purchase. There were guys who would be absolutely clueless on their style too.

What is a primal man, anyway?

In regards to looks, a primal man is often referred as the kind of man who dresses conservative and tells you that his wife chooses most of his outfits. In his societal role, this man is so ingrained towards the evolutionary psychology vision on life who believes that being in a relationship with a woman is all about nurturing him — and his children of course.

Primal men are often the kind of guy who can’t see life outside the box — therefore the whole family picture. Evolutionary psychology also explains further on this old conditioning, as the school and a purely theoretical approach explaining the ways in which the mind is shaped by gender and social pressures to survive and reproduce.

What’s called a primal man is one who is so primal in his understanding of life evolution in every sense, including being their children fashion guardians. The impact of parental guidance on a child’s fashion sense transcends mere wardrobe choices. The primal man vision is the cause of helicopter parents who become over-involved in their children's lives even as adults. Of course weaving through the fabric of a child’s emerging fashion style.

However, don’t be misguided. A primal man’s wardrobe can well have bespoke suits next to sport pants, and could be fond of funky socks and scarves (pic).

MAKE ME UP!
In
a world where looks matter,
choosing a statement makeup gives us the power to create a voice.
If we think critically, makeup isn't here only to beautify us anymore.
